The Duchess of Malfi

by John Webster

Webster’s violent tale of misogyny and deceit.

A forbidden marriage. A hidden family. A dangerous web of secrets and lies. Remarkable for its inventive and grotesque violence, yet full of dark humour, Webster’s tale of misogyny and deceit is propelled forwards in time to the period of the Industrial Revolution. This Steam-Punk inspired production highlights the rigid male-dominated world where decisions are made against a backdrop of misogyny, lust and resentment.

The recently widowed Duchess falls in love with her steward, Antonio. Trying to prevent their fiercely independent sister from marrying beneath her class, her corrupt brothers go on a disturbing quest to control her.

They unleash a series of cruel and devastating punishments that suppress her power. But will their vicious atrocities come back to haunt them?

How far does a woman have to go to protect those she loves the most? And what desperate measures will the men in her life take to determine her fate?

How can anyone survive in a world where masculinity has become so toxic?

Contains adult themes, infanticide, physical and mental violence, sexual references and death. It is not suitable for young children.
